University Halls Of Residence Or Private Rented Accommodation?

Leaving home for the first time to attend University can be a daunting experience. Finding the right student accommodation is fraught with pitfalls for the inexperienced so many first-year students opt to stay in halls of residence provided by the university accommodation office.

The rationale for this is that you will meet up with larger numbers of young people who are in the same situation as yourself and make friends more easily across a broader spectrum of the courses offered. However, modern halls of residence are usually in tower blocks, and although they have en-suite rooms, these are usually small and often in the form of cluster flats where a group of rooms share a kitchen.

What is never pointed out is the wide difference in cost between the various types of student accommodation available and rooms in halls of residence are always much more expensive than rooms offered in the private rented sector.

Many private landlords in Plymouth have upgraded their houses to offer large rooms with double beds and en-suite bathrooms in houses with comfortable communal areas, fast Wi-Fi internet and well-equipped, modern kitchens. There are far fewer lifestyle restrictions in private housing and you won’t find extra charges imposed when you want to use the laundry.
